Port Newark, others in NJ/NY were the busiest in the country for August
NEWARK, NJ — The nation’s busiest seaport was located in the Newark-New York area last month, officials said Friday.

While passenger volumes have still not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, the port system – which includes several container terminals in both states, including Port Newark – has continued to grow steadily throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Officials said 24.1% more total cargo passed through the port in August 2022 compared to the volume handled in August 2019, making last month the busiest August in the port’s history.
Port numbers in August were up 8.6% from July, officials said. Overall, 843,191 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) were moved in August – the fourth busiest month in agency history.
According to the Port Authority’s website, the Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) occupies 272 acres and handles more than 1.3 million twenty-foot equivalent containers per year. CTNP has secured a long-term extension of its lease agreement with the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey through 2050.
AIRPORTS, RAILWAY CROSSINGS, ROAD
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released the following data on its other facilities on Friday.
In August 2022, Port Authority airports handled a total of 12.5 million passengers, or 94% of pre-COVID volumes of August 2019. Airport passenger volume increased by 3 % compared to July 2022, when the airport served 12.2 million passengers.
Tunnels, bridges and terminals (TB&T)
In August 2022, the Port Authority’s four bridges and two tunnels handled a total of 10.8 million eastbound vehicles, which was similar to the August 2019 pre-pandemic level of 11 million. vehicles. August 2022 volumes were up less than 1% over prior month volumes when comparing average daily traffic. Car traffic was similar to July 2022, while truck traffic increased by 9.4%.
PATH reported 3.8 million riders in August 2022, or 53.8% of total PATH ridership in August 2019 before the pandemic. Compared to July 2022, total August 2022 ridership increased by 5.6%.
