ST Engineering and Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) have redelivered the first Airbus A320 Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) to launch customer, Vaayu Group.
The A320P2F will enter service for new cargo airline and sub-tenant Vaayu Pradhaan Air Express.
This A320P2F aircraft belongs to ST Engineering’s aviation asset management business and is the first of several converted freighter aircraft to be leased from Vaayu.
The rendering of the A320P2F completes the Airbus P2F family jointly developed by ST Engineering, Airbus and EFW.
It joins the other Airbus P2F platforms already in operation, the A330-300P2F, A330-200P2F and A321P2F, which were first re-delivered in 2017, 2018 and 2020 respectively.
“With this new delivery, our Airbus P2F family of narrowbody and widebody freighters is finally complete,” said Jordi Boto, EFW Managing Director. “This comes at a good time as the demand for converted freighters continues to grow. Our comprehensive suite of Airbus P2F solutions will serve to bridge the current gap and future growth in the air cargo market, while providing excellent choices and benefits to airlines looking to develop a diverse fleet of freighter aircraft with joint operations.
The A320P2F can accommodate up to 10 [ULD] containers and one pallet slot on the main deck, and seven container slots on the lower deck. Given its gross payload of up to 21 tons at a maximum range of 1,850 nm and a total usable containerized volume of 159 m3 (approximately 5,600 ft3), the cargo aircraft has a storage efficiency of 85%.
To meet the growing demand for freighter conversions, ST Engineering and EFW have set up new conversion sites in China and the United States this year, and will increase conversion capacity for all of their Airbus P2F programs to more than 60 slots per year by 2024.
In March, EFW has received Supplemental Type Certification (STC) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the A320P2F.
In December 2021, the The A320P2F performed its first test flight.
