Soaring gas prices make it hard for delivery drivers to make money
BUFFALO NY (WIVB) — The price at the pump is making things very difficult right now, especially for people who earn their living behind the wheel. Drivers from companies like Uber Eats and DoorDash now have to work fairer to recoup the money they lost filling up their tanks.
“Not good at all, because maybe then maybe I should start looking for another job somewhere, a stable job where I don’t have to drive,” said Uber driver Sumsul Shain.
“Just to get to work you have to spend so much money, you know what I’m saying, so that kind of defeats the purpose,” the Uber Eats driver said, Amber Simone. “I mean, it’s just a little crazy to spend $50 a day on gas, especially when I have to drive 3-4 hours, to make just enough to fill my tank, so it’s kind of hard for me. , especially when I’m doing this full time.
As of Wednesday, the cost per gallon was as high as $4.69 at some locations.
“It’s not just us drivers in Buffalo, even regular people have to get around using their cars, so let’s say SUV, you don’t have a hybrid, electric, you still have to get from place to place. the next and every time you start that engine, you’re using gas,” Shain said.
Uber and other ride-sharing services said they would help drivers cope with rising gas prices by adding a temporary surcharge for customers. Simone says it doesn’t make much difference.
“It’s kind of hard to make money off it unless you drive all day,” she said.
