Crew of burning freighter in Atlantic Ocean rescued in daring operation
Felicity Ace, the ship carrying around 4,000 luxury cars, which caught fire in the middle of the Atlantic on its journey from Germany to the United States, is giving firefighters a hard time trying to put out the fire . The 22-crew ship caught fire on Wednesday near the coast of the Azores Islands, Portugal.
Recently a video emerged of the spot in the middle of the Atlantic where Felicity Ace is engulfed in flames and the clip shows the 22 crew members being rescued by the Portuguese Air Force. The rescue operation was carried out through the Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Delgada) by the Portuguese Navy and Air Force.
“The Lajes Air Search and Rescue Coordination Center carried out the air operation, after the Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center requested the Air Force to commit resources air,” the Portuguese Air Force said.
The rescue operation was carried out on February 16. In the video, crew members are seen being transported by the Air Force helicopter, EH-101 Merlin. The first image shows Felicity Ace covered in heavy smoke. In the following image, the tanker, “Resilient Warrior”, which temporarily accommodates the 22 crew members is visible. The rescue team then lifts two limbs at a time to safety.
Crew members were transported from the tanker “Resilient Warriors” to the Failal Islands in batches of 11. The team that rescued the crew of Felicity Ace included two rescuers, a system operator, an aviation nurse and two pilots , who showed the utmost skill in bringing the crew to safety. Fortunately, none of the crew needed any medical assistance.

The 200-meter-long vessel was sailing to Davisville in the United States from Emden in Germany when it caught fire. The ship carried high-end luxury and sports cars, including Porsches, Bentleys, Audis and Volkswagens, among others. The Panamanian-flagged vessel was then taken over, after which Portuguese navy boats and four merchant ships assisted in the rescue.
