Shipping a container from China costs almost as much as a new Honda Civic
The cost at ship a container from China to the United States has reached record levels. Moving a container the pacific is costing shippers more than $ 20,000, a number that is almost double what it was in July, which was already double what it cost in January.
I thought about importing a motorcycle. Back in May, I contacted importers only to find out that some are not doing motorcycle imports right now because shipping containers are so expensive. Things have only gotten worse since, because the cost of container transport has almost doubled since July.
According to Freightos Baltic Index, a platform that tracks global shipping prices, the worldwide average cost to ship a container is $ 10,517. This echoes similar numbers reported by The Economist last month.
Ship a container from China and East Asia can bring a shipper down to $ 20,825, just under the price of a new Honda Civic.
We have already discussed how the supply chain is pushed beyond its limits. Consumer demand exceeds the speed at which carriers can move goods across seas and for the ports to handle everything. This led to some ships leave empty containers in ports to save time while others use containers that are well past their prime. Dozens of ships remain stranded outside California and New York City waiting to unload for weeks.
Some companies have found ways to get around the high prices. Peloton, the makers of these expensive exercise bikes, are using air freight. Big box stores only charter entire ships for themselves. Others simply increase the prices accordingly. Surprisingly, one of those stores is Dollar Tree, which will now sell goods for prices above $ 1.
It’s unclear when things will return to normal, but some experts suggest it could go until 2023. Fortunately, the price to ship a vehicle on a ro-ro ship did not explode. So if you want to import a vehicle, skip the container and have it driven on a ship.
