Yachting World asked the best sailors and gurus in the marine industry to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our time, and round-the-world racer Pete Goss named the Mayflower. Here’s the report :
The Mayflower is certainly the most unusual nomination to date for the coolest yacht in the world! He came to Pete Goss ‘Yachting World, on the 400th anniversary of the famous pilgrims’ journey from Plymouth to the New World.
“We loved our time in the States,” says Pete Goss of the extended cruise he and his wife Tracey took in their Garcia Exploration 45 Pearl.
“So the Mayflower is the boat for me, for it carried the seed that became a great nation. “
The Mayflower left Plymouth in September 1620 carrying 102 passengers, 40 of whom were Protestant separatists who intended to found a new church in the New World.
A merchant vessel of around 100 feet capable of carrying 180 tons of cargo, the Mayflower was a square-rigged three-mast with two large castle-style structures at the bow and stern that were typical of ships of this period.
The rear “castle” was 30 feet tall and its design was not very weatherproof or comfortable – the trip to Cape Cod took over two months.
