CPA: Free net access for seafarers on board ships moored at the CIP
LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines – Seafarers aboard ships docking at Cebu International Port (CIP) will enjoy free, unlimited internet access.
This was announced by the Cebu Port Authority as it celebrates the 22nd National Maritime Week from September 20-26, 2021, in partnership with the Associated Philippine Seafarers Union (APSU) and a telecommunications company.
The CPA will provide portable Wi-Fi units to docked ships when they are moored at the PIC.
The program aims to help sailors who cannot leave their ships due to restrictions related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to stay in touch with their families.
“Due to the restrictions linked to the pandemic, seafarers currently cannot disembark from their ships when they are moored in ports,” said CPA Director General Leonilo Miole.
âSpending months at sea and long periods away from home leaves sailors vulnerable to mental health issues. By providing free internet access when docked at the CIP, sailors can use it to connect with families, friends, watch movies and update, âsaid Miole.
This year’s 22nd National Maritime Week celebration is themed âSeafarers: The Future of Shipping at the Heart of the Actionâ. The agency will also celebrate National Seafarers Day on September 26, 2021.
âThe global shipping industry has played a critical role in the response to COVID-19. Seafarers play a key role in delivering the majority of our supplies and products essential to the functioning of our societies, including food, fuel, manufactured goods, medical supplies, âhe said.
Lawyer Joselito Pedaria, head of APSU and Cebu Port Commissioner for Cargo Handling and Labor Sector, for his part said the initiative was also a simple way to recognize the major contributions of seafarers in as pioneers in the fight against COVID-19. .
