A new innovation from GTT: a Bunker & Feeder LNG vessel concept “Without ballast water” more respectful of the environment
– Approval in principle (AiP) of CCS and DNV –
Paris – July 8e, 2021. GTT announces that it has obtained, with its partner Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group Co. (HZ), a double approval in principle (AiP), from the classification society China Classification Society (CCS) and from DNV, for “Ballast-Water-Free” “LNG Bunker & Feeder concept.
The AiPs received recognize the conformity of this “ballast water-free” vessel design with the rules and codes relating to ocean-going vessels, their construction and their equipment.
The “Ballast-Water-Free” design equipped with the GTT membrane system allows the construction of ships more economical and more environmentally friendly.
The majority of merchant ships in the world use ballast water when the bunkers are empty or partially loaded in order to maintain seaworthy conditions. As a result, a considerable amount of ballast water is transported by ships every day. Even when ballast water is treated, there is a risk of transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens from one area to another. The solution developed by GTT completely eliminates this risk. In addition, the elimination of the ballast water treatment system also reduces energy consumption and CO.2 the footprint of ships.
A ballast-free vessel also offers advantages in terms of investment and operating cost, simplification of vessel operation, reduction of corrosion and extension of service life. An extensive test campaign in the hull test tank demonstrated the design’s good navigation and seakeeping capabilities.
Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, mentionned: “This major technological innovation to improve both the environmental and economic performance of Bunker & Feeder LNG vessels was made possible thanks to the support of our partner Hudong Zhonghua. We welcome the CCS and DNV approvals, which allow us to offer our shipownersand charterers customers a high valuetechnological solution. GTT is once again demonstrating its ability to innovate to make ships ever more environmentally friendly and comply with the environmental directives of the maritime industry. “
