GMR Hyderabad Air Cargo expands its pharmaceutical zone
Preparing to cope with the expected surge in Covid vaccine movements from Hyderabad, a major vaccine hub, GMR Hyderabad Air Cargo (GHAC) has expanded its land and airside facilities to meet the unique requirements of temperature-controlled vaccine and pharmaceutical shipments.
The existing facility in the pharmaceutical zone is being expanded to almost double the area and the capacities of all temperature zones – 15-25 degrees, 2-8 degrees and -20 degrees Celsius, have been increased.
It introduced a “Cold Super Store” as part of the expansion of the pharmaceutical area in order to mitigate temperature variations during the unloading of pharmaceutical shipments.
Since the exit from the Covid pandemic last year, Hyderabad airport has been at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic.
The Hyderabad region is expected to be the largest concentration of Covid-19 vaccine manufacturing capacity in the world, with around 3.6 billion doses of various brands of vaccine expected to be produced by facilities in the region over the past 18 years. to the next 24 months. Since January 2021, GHAC has handled more than 100 tonnes of Covid vaccines which have been distributed from Hyderabad to various regions of the country.
Lately, there has been a sharp increase in the movement of oxygen concentrators in Hyderabad to meet medical demands due to the pandemic.
The GHAC has formed a special working group comprising customs authorities, airlines, freight forwarders and other stakeholders to ensure the prompt clearance and processing of consignments of Covid relief material.
As of May 1, 2021, more than 11,500 units of oxygen concentrators have been imported to Hyderabad from all over the world and other cities in India. The shipments arrived on both scheduled and special charter flights as nations, governments, airlines, airports, customs, freight forwarders, ground handlers and all stakeholders came together to bring essential equipment to India.
In addition to the oxygen concentrators, GHAC processed two shipments of Sputnik V vaccine from Russia, which require specialized handling and procedures to maintain temperature integrity (-20 ° C).
It has continuously handled Covid relief supplies through cargo ships carrying Covid vaccines, medical supplies and relief supplies such as PPE kits, masks and disinfectants.
