“This investment demonstrates Airborne’s continued commitment to provide the most efficient and modern repair services,” said Todd France, President of Airborne Maintenance & Engineering Services, “and aligns with our commitment to provide service. unmatched customer. ”
During the refurbishment, Airborne’s partnership with Akron University advanced into Phase II of further research into supersonic particle deposition (SPD), commonly referred to as “cold spray technology”. This collaboration, established in 2015, aims to drive economic growth through advanced manufacturing in the state of Ohio.
The Akron University grant recently enabled the school to install two vertical factories, a nitrogen generation system and a sheet metal shear at Airborne’s newly renovated CRO facility at Wilmington Air Park, as well as an additional paint booth and sandblasting booth. The Airborne refurbishment increased the footprint of its manufacturing division while widening the ceilings and removing the walls to support additional machinery and equipment.
“Akron University has been a great partner over the years,” said Brad Carucci, Airborne Director of Component Repair / Overhaul and Manufacturing. “This refurbishment and expansion project reflects Airborne’s promise to provide additional repair possibilities and solutions for components that would have been deemed beyond economical repair. The Cold Spray Phase II joint R&D initiative will build on the groundbreaking initial research resulting from this collaboration and will aim to implement the SPD process as a commercially viable solution for use in aircraft repairs.
The SPD process involves using a supersonic jet of expanded gas to spray metal powder onto a solid surface with sufficient energy to cause a bond with the surface without creating a heat affected zone.
